A Different Kind of Organized Play Part 1

I've been gaming competitively for over 20 years, and I think it's about time I began to share some of the gaming knowledge I've acquired over the years. I'll start with the first tabletop game that I began taking serious, Magic the Gathering(MtG), and how MtG taught me how to take care of my gaming products to stay better organized.

Gaming Is An Investment

It's true! Whether you plan on just having fun or taking the game you play a little more seriously, you have to protect your investment. Watching other MtG players as I was growing I saw how well everyone treated their cards. They had sleeves, binders, boxes, etc. and I just had a plain old cardboard box that held everything. Over time my cards began to suffer from wear and tear, so I began investing in some of the accessories to give my investment longer life. As an allergy sufferer I also needed to upgrade from cardboard to plastic to reduce the amount of dust that can collect on cardboard materials too.

This is a perfect example of a plastic box I first bought to store MtG cards, and as you can see it now holds some (of my many) Heroclix accessories and game elements. It's spacious enough to hold some of the bigger items that may not fit inside smaller boxes, and it's compartments can keep everything neatly divided so you can easily find the item you're looking for. Another benefit about these particular plastic boxes is that they are also deep enough to hold playing cards and clix!

Once Heroclix began using playing cards as a regular part of the game I began to transfer my MtG cards out of these boxes and used them to store Heroclix cards instead. Over time I just started putting anything extra that came with the game inside these boxes. As you can see they're the perfect size for almost anything Heroclix related you can think of. These types of boxes come in different sizes, so make sure you're getting the ones that are deep enough to store these somewhat fragile items.

Handle With Care

Speaking of fragile items, some Heroclix come with extra parts or are so fragile that they need extra protection when being stored or transported. The gravity feed sets come with these plastic boxes to protect the clix inside. I like to reuse these to create less waste and transport/store certain clix that may be too fragile to keep unprotected.

These boxes are also small enough to still be able to squeeze into the regular storage compartments with your other clix, so don't be afraid to keep your more fragile clix in these

for added protection.

The Sequel

In case you missed it, this is Part 1 of an ongoing series aimed to help you protect your investment. There are different types of hobby boxes available, and in the next part we'll delve into the smaller items and how to best store/transport them. If you have any suggestions that you'd like for me to cover in this series please feel free to reach out to me on social media.
